Bala Chakravarthy, IMD Professor Emeritus of Strategy and Leadership, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 SMS Service Award for his contributions to the Strategic Management Society.
This recognition acknowledges remarkable and lasting dedication that has made an exceptional and distinguished impact on the Strategic Management Society and its members.
The Society is an organization that brings together 3,000 members from over 80 different countries, representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The organization’s primary focus is on the development and dissemination of insights related to the field of strategic management.

After a thorough assessment of numerous deserving candidates, Chakravarthy was chosen by the SMS Awards & Honors Committee to receive this award due to his unwavering commitment and dedicated contribution to the Strategic Management Society since its inception.
His remarkable service on the SMS Board of Directors, pivotal role in establishing the SMS Interest Groups, organization of some of the earliest SMS conferences, and dedication to the Strategic Management Journal’s editorial board were all influential factors in his selection for this prestigious recognition. He was among the first to be inducted as a Fellow of the SMS in 2005 for his significant contributions to the theory and practice of strategic management.
