How can more people help to solve today’s challenges? How can we mobilize resources and build partnerships to create a better future? How do we ensure our giving is effective?

A new book by experts from a leading business school and a top philanthropy advisory firm seeks to answer those questions by helping more families make a difference through giving, drawing on decades of experience working with philanthropists around the globe.

The Family Philanthropy Navigator by Peter Vogel, IMD Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy, Etienne Eichenberger, Managing Partner of WISE philanthropy advisors and Malgorzata Kurak, IMD Research Fellow, offers an easy-to-use, step-by-step inspirational guide for new and existing philanthropic families to initiate or enhance their journeys in giving.

With real-world case studies, practical tools and hands-on advice, the Navigator is designed to help individuals and families make a positive, lasting impact.

“The world needs all hands-on deck to address the big challenges we face – they can’t just be fixed by governments or NGOs alone. Our mission with this book is to inspire more individuals and families to give and to ensure that their giving is effective and efficient,” Professor Vogel said.

“For philanthropy to be truly effective, it is vital that families know how to nurture the right kind of partnerships to both achieve their goals in giving and make a difference in tackling local or global challenges,” explained Eichenberger.

“Our hope is that the Family Philanthropy Navigator will enable more families around the world to discover the joy and importance of giving and to give in organized and impactful ways that deliver lasting change for the causes they care about,” said Kurak. - IMD Business School

“An important and timely contribution”

The Family Philanthropy Navigator takes new and experienced philanthropists on an immersive journey to explore and define the purpose, relationships and organization of their giving.

From asking why you want to give and which causes you support to understanding who to partner with and how to manage resources, the book is a one-stop guide for a rewarding and successful adventure in philanthropy.

“The Family Philanthropy Navigator is an important and timely contribution to the evolving needs and role of philanthropy in the world at large and within the family enterprise system,” said Thierry Mauvernay, Chairman of biopharmaceutical group Debiopharm, which funds the Debiopharm Chair for Family Philanthropy at IMD.

To coincide with the book launch, #givingtuesday and the widely recognized season of giving, the authors have pledged to donate their royalty payments from sales of the book registered between December 1st and December 24th inclusive as part of a campaign to raise funds for Fondation Mère Sofia, a Swiss NGO that provides much-needed support to vulnerable communities in the Lausanne area. You can find out more about the book here, including pre-order details.

A webinar event, focusing on the future of philanthropy, top tips for effective philanthropy, and the fundraising campaign will take place on December 1 at 1330 CET. You can register to attend the webinar via this link.
