IMD is pleased to announce the appointment of José Parra-Moyano as Professor of Digital Strategy. Parra-Moyano’s research and teaching are focused on the management and economics of data and privacy and how firms can create sustainable value in the digital economy.

An award-winning teacher, he also founded his own successful startup, was appointed to the World Economic Forum’s Shapers Community of young people driving global change in 2014, and was named on the Forbes ’30 under 30′ list of outstanding young entrepreneurs in Switzerland in 2018.

“We’re thrilled to welcome José to the IMD team. His expertise will assist our participants navigate the route to sustainable value creation in the digital economy. His exciting research agenda is fully in tune with the needs of our clients as this space continues to evolve rapidly,” said Seán Meehan, Professor of Marketing and Management and Dean of Faculty at IMD.

“I am passionate about unraveling the puzzles that business leaders face when it comes to the design and execution of digital strategies,” said Parra-Moyano.

“IMD is the ideal place for the needle-moving conversations that society requires. This is one of the reasons why I am so excited to join IMD.”

He is particularly interested in the role that data and AI can play in solving organizational and societal problems.

“I am very focused on finding the sweet spot where business leaders can use digital technology to not only enhance the value of their firms, but also to shape society positively. One of my missions is to help business leaders find this sweet spot for their respective organizations,” he says.

“For me, the captivating aspect of digital technology is its ability to foster novel interactions between companies and individuals, thereby facilitating previously unattainable relationships and transactions,” he said. “The interplay between the utilization of digital technology and the potential for these unique relationships or transactions grants business leaders significant agency in shaping the future. Their decisions on whether and how to adopt digital technologies for addressing specific problems not only influence their own operations but also establish the framework within which society functions.”

He is currently working on a study of data cooperatives – interorganizational entities that collaborate on data sharing and AI development in order to generate unprecedented value.

He will also teach on IMD’s MBA and Strategic Finance programs.
