The Qatar Petroleum High Performance Boards Award Ceremony, held in Doha in January 2017, marked the culmination of a year-long transformational journey during which IMD and Qatar Petroleum laid the foundation for QP’s corporate governance of the future.
Speaking at the ceremony, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, and Professor Didier Cossin, Director of the IMD Global Board Center reflected on the program’s achievements and the way forward.
Over the course of the past year, the Qatar Petroleum High Performance Board Program, led by IMD, guided more than 100 Qatari board directors through an extensive course of five modules covering governance, board effectiveness, ethics, finance and risk, strategy and leadership, all tailored to the role and responsibilities of board members. Participation in the program extended to board members and directors of Qatar’s oil & gas industry but also to other strategic entities within Qatar such as the Ministry of Finance, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar National Bank, and the Pension Authority.
Six IMD Professors, Didier Cossin, Paul Strebel, Anand Narasimhan, Knut Haanaes, Salvatore Cantale and Francisco Szekely, from six different countries and with diverse expertise, ensured an enriching educational experience which received excellent ratings and a high level of attendance from Qatar Petroleum’s directors.
During the ceremony a number of participants receiving their diploma were given the opportunity to express what they appreciated about the program and how much impact it would have on their board work in the future.
“The Qatar Petroleum High Performance Boards Program was an excellent collaboration between IMD and QP, which already has begun to positively affect QP’s corporate governance. We have received interest from other industries in the Gulf region and are looking forward to pursuing further opportunities at supporting governance improvement,” said Didier Cossin.
