Holcim Group Support: Managing knowledge initiatives

20 pages
December 2000
Reference: IMD-3-0980

The case highlights the knowledge initiatives that have been undertaken by Holcim, a Swiss cement manufacturer with worldwide presence. After Holcim’s CEO, Thomas Schmidheiny, initiated the policy of becoming a learning organization, Juerg Meili, head of Holcim’s management consulting arm was charged with the task of developing knowledge initiatives that backed the company’s policy. The case shows the various initiatives – yellow pages, communities of practice, project management and best practices – that were started as well as the difficulties of their implementation in a highly decentralized organization.
