8 pages
December 2009
Reference: IMD-2-0150

The case demonstrates the potential companies have to drive innovation in order to reach ambitious CO2 reduction targets. It documents Fairmont’s efforts under WWF International’s Climate Savers initiative. Climate Savers is a platform to transform business and industry into pioneers on climate and energy solutions. The case focuses on actions taken by Fairmont during the full restoration of The Savoy in London and the building of the new Fairmont Pittsburgh in the US. It shows the feasibility of stretching targets for lowering CO2 emissions from hotel operations and provides a framework for discussions around the challenges of aligning portfolio growth with the smooth roll-out of energy and carbon management programs.

Learning Objective

1) Deliver strong arguments that ambitious CO2 reduction targets trigger innovation and are therefore good for business development and growth. 2) Inspire business leaders to adopt effective management initiatives for rolling out CO2 reduction initiatives. 3) Show the potential for energy-efficiency projects in hotels and resorts management.
