Crisis at Renault: The Vilvoorde plant closing (B)

4 pages
November 1997
Reference: IMD-3-0718

This is a follow-on to the A case, and describes events from June 1997, when Lionel Jospin became France’s prime minister, through July 1997, when a social plan was agreed upon to close the Vilvoorde plant. The case updates some of the issues outstanding at the end of the original case. It also raises new issues for discussion, including the use of an outside consultant to provide support for Renault’s decision, the actions of Jospin regarding Renault, and the nature of the eventual social plan.
