The spin-off of Ciba Specialty Chemicals in early 1997 was the culmination of several years of Shareholder Value thinking. The new company is free to pursue its own strategy, but it is also facing strong pressure for improved performance from the capital markets. Completely new structures and systems are being put in place. The culture is also changing to a more performance oriented culture.
