Case Study

Schindler 300p

Reference: IMD-3-0741

The case is about the attempt by Schindler of Switzerland to introduce a new standardized elevator to the Asia region. The design and development of the product, led by a team of two people, has taken place very quickly, but now that it is ready for sale, the Asian country organizations which are part of Jardine-Schindler, (a 50-50 joint venture between Jardine Matheson and Schindler), seem reluctant to sell it. The issue in the case is why they are in this apparent impasse, and where they should go from here. The participant is placed in the position of the vice president for Asia, and videotape is available, which should be used at the beginning of class, which shows two subordinates giving different explanations of what the problem is. One is technical – the product design is wrong – the other is behavioral – resistance to change.
